Making a Claim

Information and guidance on making claims through the Motor Insurance Database

How to Make a Claim

If you've been involved in an accident with a vehicle, AskMid can help you access the information you need to make a claim. Our service provides access to the Motor Insurance Database (MID), which contains details of all insured vehicles in the UK.

The process of making a claim depends on your specific situation. Below are the most common scenarios and how AskMid can assist you.

Claims Against Insured Drivers

If you've been involved in an accident with a vehicle that is insured, follow these steps:

  1. Collect the vehicle registration number of the other vehicle involved
  2. Use our insurance check service to verify the insurance details
  3. Contact your own insurance company to report the accident
  4. Provide them with the insurance details of the other party
  5. Your insurer will then handle the claim process with the other driver's insurance company

Tip: Always take photos of the accident scene and damage if it's safe to do so. This can help with your claim.

Claims Against Uninsured Drivers

If you discover that the other vehicle is uninsured, you may still be able to make a claim:

  • If you have comprehensive insurance, you may be covered for damage to your own vehicle
  • For personal injury claims, you may be eligible to claim through the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB)
  • Contact the MIB within 14 days of discovering the other driver is uninsured
  • Provide all evidence you have collected, including the AskMid insurance check results

Important: Claims against uninsured drivers must typically be made within three years of the accident date.
